Doctor G Movie Review
Overview:
Dr. Uday Gupta (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a young medical resident who has always dreamed of working in the orthopedics department. However, when he is placed in the gynaecology department instead, he struggles to adapt and is initially hazed by his colleagues. Despite his initial reluctance, Uday eventually learns to love his job and forms a close bond with his colleague Dr. Fatima (Rakul Preet).
Along the way, he also navigates a difficult relationship with senior doctor Dr. Nandini (Shefali Shah) and learns some valuable lessons about life and his chosen profession.
Script Analysis:
Doctor G suffers from a cluttered and inconsistent narrative, with four writers contributing to the story and screenplay. The film starts off strong, with a good balance of humour and drama as Uday navigates his new surroundings and struggles to prove himself to his colleagues.
However, the second half of the film falters with heavy-handed drama and preachy messages that feel forced and out of place. While there are some funny moments and entertaining character interactions, the emotional connection with the story is lacking and the film struggles to build any real momentum or depth.
Star Performances:
Ayushmann Khurrana gives a strong performance as Uday, imbuing the character with a sense of warmth and vulnerability that helps to elevate the film. Despite the weaknesses of the script, Khurrana manages to hold his own and deliver a believable and engaging performance.
Rakul Preet is also charming as Fatima, bringing a sense of nuance and complexity to the character that helps to balance out some of the film's more predictable elements. Shefali Shah adds depth and gravitas to the role of Nandini, but the character's arc is underdeveloped and feels rushed in the latter half of the film.
Direction and Production:
Anubhuti Kashyap's direction is competent, but the film's writing lets it down. Kashyap does a good job of building a sense of camaraderie and community within the medical department, but the second half of the film feels disjointed and unfocused. The production design and cinematography are adequate, but nothing particularly stands out.
Final Verdict:
Doctor G is a flawed but ultimately watchable film that is worth checking out for Ayushmann Khurrana's performance and the entertaining character interactions. While the film struggles to fully utilize its potential and falls victim to some predictable and heavy-handed plot twists, it is still a decent way to pass the time.
However, it is not a strong enough film to recommend for a theatrical viewing and may be better suited for a streaming platform.
