Amitabh Bachchan, Danny Denzongpa and Anupam Kher's UUNCHAI REVIEW

 Introduction:

Uunchai is a drama film directed by Sooraj R Barjatya, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Danny Denzongpa, Anupam Kher and Boman Irani. The film follows the story of three elderly friends who embark on a journey to honor their late friend's last wishes by immersing his ashes in the mountains he hails from.

Synopsis:

After the demise of their fittest friend, three elderly men from Delhi resolve to honor his last wishes and immerse his ashes in the mountains he hails from. The film follows their journey as they build their stamina, hoodwink their overprotective wives and come to terms with some bitter truths about estranged partners, extended families and parenting.

Story Review:

Uunchai has a simple enough story that drags on for 169 minutes and 48 seconds on the sheer good will of its veteran cast. The film's focus fluctuates between friendship, trekking, aging, closures and making peace. The mawkish sentimentality of the clumsily written conflicts and the shoving down of Piya Ka Ghar's philosophical melody, Yeh Jeevan Hai as an explanation for 'it is what it is' makes it worse.

Positive Aspects:

The film has some good performances from the veteran cast, particularly Amitabh Bachchan, who sparkles in both comedic and dramatic moments. The Himalayas are a metaphor for age and will as well as overcoming life-sized mountains.

Negative Aspects:

The bonds between the friends seem made-up and not genuine. The script is poorly written and the film is too long. The mawkish sentimentality of the clumsily written conflicts and the shoving down of Piya Ka Ghar's philosophical melody, Yeh Jeevan Hai as an explanation for 'it is what it is' makes it worse.

Performances:

Amitabh Bachchan, Danny Denzongpa, Anupam Kher, and Boman Irani give good performances. However, the script doesn't give them much to work with and their characters remain one-dimensional.

Technical Points:

The film's cinematography is good and captures the beauty of the Himalayas. The music is melodramatic and doesn't add anything to the film.

Final Verdict:

Sooraj R Barjatya's Uunchai is a poorly written drama film that forces the audience to feel emotions through melodrama. The performances from the veteran cast are good but the script is weak and the film is too long. The film's focus fluctuates between friendship, trekking, aging, closures and making peace, making it an inconsistent watch.
